When Going Through a Divorce Focus on the Long Run Decisions

|

When going through a divorce case it is extremely easy to get wrapped up in the conflict with your spouse, and engage in every little skirmish.  Throughout the case you will have to constantly weigh how important issues are to you, and whether you want litigate or mediate those issues.  These fights can be extremely costly as you try to minimize attorney fees, and can be even more costly on your mental health.  Unfortunately, I hear all too often from divorce litigants that they cannot stop thinking about their case, the unknown, and what the future is going to look like for them.  It is important to focus on decisions that will have a lasting long-term impact on your life several years down the road.  When confronting case issues for clients I always test myself by asking the question, “Will this help my client in the long run?”  If the answer to that question is yes, we then consider the cost of that strategy in terms of their long term strategy and goals.   Finally, consider if a costly bill from your attorney is worth being “right” at a court hearing.  Focus on the end game, and always try and plan for the long run to get you through this difficult time.
