Adoption refers to the act by which an adult formally becomes the guardian of a child and incurs the rights and responsibilities of a parent. At the conclusion of the formal process, a legal relationship between the child and the guardian will have formed. Prior to finalization of an adoption, a natural parent’s rights may need to be relinquished or terminated. In some cases, involved parties may desire an open adoption, wherein the biological parent may be entitled to some communication with or information about the child. In other cases, a closed adoption, wherein there is no lasting contact between the biological parent and the child, is more appropriate.
